I first went to Greenland in 1984, and have been
engaged in research there ever since. My main field area has been at the
edge of the ice sheet near Kangerlussuaq (just above the arctic circle
on the west coast), and I've also been able to work further north at Jakobshavn
and at locations in between the two. I've been in the field alone and with
some great friends, in summer and in winter, sometimes with helicopters
and jeeps and other times just foot-slogging in the old-fashioned way.
I've camped out at -30, lived alone with the caribou for weeks on end,
and seen the northern lights over some of the world's most remote and spectacular
wilderness. Oh... and done some glaciological work, too! |
