The Isles of Scilly

Notes for the "The Queen of the Isles" poem

The "Queen of the Isles" served alongside "The Scillonian" for a few years in the mid-1960s. When I was first getting to know Scilly she was a regular part of island life, and the announcement that she was to be taken out of service was the first time in my childhood experience of Scilly that I was aware of something substantial changing in the fabric around me.

Nearly 50 years later there isn't much in that fabric that recalls the Queen of the Isles, but by an accident of timing she was a large part of my early experience of Scilly. The story of The Queen of the Isles, including what happened to her after she left Scilly, is told at http://www.queenoftheisles.com/

The photo's here and on the page with the poem were taken at St Mary's around 1965 by my Dad.
