Basal ice typically contains a
great deal of debris that has been entrained (picked up) from the glacier
bed. It is not like the ice you might put in a drink! The bottom of a glacier
is like a huge grinding machine dragging rocks along the bed.
It is easy to see how glaciers create landscapes of erosion and deposition when we think of glaciers as debris conveyor-belts, and don't imagine them to be made just of clean ice! Moraines in Greenland
