Basal ice, Greenland
Rocky Mountains moraine

Basal ice typically contains a great deal of debris that has been entrained (picked up) from the glacier bed. It is not like the ice you might put in a drink! The bottom of a glacier is like a huge grinding machine dragging rocks along the bed.

It is easy to see how glaciers create landscapes of erosion and deposition when we think of glaciers as debris conveyor-belts, and don't imagine them to be made just of clean ice!
