An Alphabet of Glaciers - D

D is for the drifts of snow from which we grow, and for the ‘drift’ of debris that will show where we have been by signs of diamict and dropstone, dump-moraine and dust. D is for the Drift of North Atlantic flow that switches on and off in tempo as we come and go, as come and go we must. D is for deuterium and diatom, degree day and drag spool and drill bit and the dye-tracing some of you trust to discriminate drainage: discrete or distributed, Darcian or deluge, which delivers the debris first to the distal slopes and then to the deep, deep sea. D is for Dansgaard-Oeschger, deep-sea core and detrital dolomitic carbonate… talk of which sends some of us to deep, deep sleep. To sleep, to dream… to dream of drumlins and deforming beds! Of driving stress and facies diagenesis! Dream of dispersed facies and debris bands and the dead ice of deglaciation drawn on a DEM denoting distributions! D may be for debris, dust and dirt, but also delirium, and dream and delight.
